ARDD celebrates World Press Freedom Day and announces the winners #AlNahdaYouth Social Journalism Competition

Amman – On Sunday May 3 2020 marking the World Press Freedom Day, The Arab Renaissance for Democracy and Development (ARDD) announced #Al Nahda Youth Social Journalism Competition winners. The Competition which was launched as part of “HADAF: Promoting Social Peace and Resiliance” project, is implemented by ARDD in partnership with the International Institute for Nonviolent Action ,within the framework of the Peace and Social Cohesion, youth enablement and Freedom of Expression and Right to Information programs, aimed at engaging the youth, unleashing their voices and their participation in preparation for launching ARDD’s new media platform dedicated to shed light on youth’s voices and identify their issues and their proposed solutions. This competition also aims to uncover young talents and develop them in the field of social journalism, thus contributing to enhancing the space for freedom of opinion and expression.

ARDD launched this competition calling on passionate young women and men aspiring to bring about change and renaissance in their societies, to submit essays addressing the importance of one of the following topics (solidarity and social peace, education, youth enablement, gender justice, governance, the right to information and freedom of expression, human and economic development, forced migration and refugees) in their daily lives and to highlight them, to reflect the importance of the ideals of justice, equality and social cohesion.

The applications were evaluated by an independent committee of competent journalists namely Muhammad Shamma and Rania Al-Sarayrah in addition to ARDD’s media specialist according to the following criteria: originality of the idea, effort in research and tracking information, human rights awareness, youth and structural perspective, narration and creativity. 26 applications were submitted to the competition, 4 of which were excluded for not meeting the conditions. The committee announced the winners to be as follows: the first place prize of 500 JODs was awarded to Afnan Fakhri Mansour Abu Yahya for her article (The problem of data protection and obtaining information), which dealt with the important issue of the right of information and was distinguished by good writing based on detailed research, while the second place prize of 300 JODs, was awarded to Abdul Hadi Khalil Owaisi’s essay titled (Letters lit by humans) and deals with refugees and forced migration in a distinct literary and humanitarian manner, while the third place prize of 200 JODs was awarded to Maimouna Hassan Sadiq Mallah for her article (Differentiated education and its impact on the educational process), which addresses this important topic in the educational process.

A group of talented candidates, who applied for the award, in addition to the three winners, will be chosen to participate in specialized media workshops that work on honing and developing their talents, and preparing a number of media materials that will be published in a new electronic platform developed by ARDD to voice youth issues and opinions especially those of refugees and people those in host communities.

“We chose World Press Freedom Day to celebrate the young winners and congratulate them on their achievement, to emphasize the importance of press freedom and its role in highlighting community issues, making their voices heard, and disseminating truth, and rejecting rumors, which is more important today than ever, especially in light of COVID-19, and stressing the importance of young community journalism, we rely on the conscious youth and their role by to convey evidence-based information, educating the community, voicing their issues and proposing innovative solutions on the ground” said ARDD CEO Samar Muhareb.
