Amman’s Mayor talks to Al Nahda Forum’s Audience at “Amman … the city of light” Panel Discussion

As part of its regular meetings with experts and officials, the Arab Renaissance Organization for Democracy and Development (ARDD) Nahda forum held a panel discussion on Monday 9th of September 2019 with His Excellency Dr Yousef Al-Shawarbeh the Mayor of Amman.

The session titled “Amman: The City of Light… the city, the responsibility, and the future”, held after Amman was given the city of light title by the UNHCR for its efforts regarding the refugees, was moderated by Dr. Zeid Al-Ayadat; ARDD’s Board of Trustees Chairman, and the Director of Strategic Studies Center. The discussion was attended by economic, cultural and political figures, as well as youth, civil society institutions, and numerous international organizations, such as the UNHCR. Thus enriching the discussion which talked about Amman since its inception, through its various phases and aspects, its present and its future.

Al-Shawarbeh presented his reform vision, which he highlighted through four main folds: public transport, automation, legislative development, and enhanced investment. Essentially, the main focus of the session was on public transport. “No city will be able to develop if it lacks the means of public transportation,” he said. He promised that by December 2020 the “fast bus” infrastructure will be finalized, and the public transport system in Amman will be upgraded and modernized through an institutional transport company.

“We have not seen an assessment of public transport for more than 50 years, and we did not have a renewal plan for public transportation system,” Dr.Shawarbeh explained, then a Q& A session was conducted and members of the audience praised the efforts exerted by the Mayor and the Municipality teams. Then issues such as human rights issues, partnerships with the private sector, cooperation with NGOs, alongside proposed operational initiatives by the youth. For instance, Mrs. Fawzia Steitiyeh highlighted the important role of Jordan and the capital in welcoming refugees. “Jordan should not be punished for hosting refugees,” she said.

In conclusion, after the Q&A session, The Mayor promised Al Nahda Forum’s audience to hold similar sessions in the future to discuss upcoming projects. His Excellency concluded the session with great optimism, “Jordan is doing well, and its future will be fine,” he said, pointing out the importance of strengthening the relationship between its citizens and official institutions, which will be achieved through recognized achievements and rational decisions.
