Generating Empowerment through Market Solidarity (GEMS)
ARDD believes in an inclusive market economy that mitigates risks of unemployment due to a status of vulnerability caused by displacement or protracted poverty and creates equal chances for all.
With this in mind, ARDD has launched the project “Generating Empowerment through Market Solidarity (GEMS)” in 2017. The GEMS Project aims to empower refugees and Jordanian host community members economically by equipping them with specialized vocational, handicraft and sales and marketing skills. As one of its first activities ARDD initiated a cooperative with the specialized private sector entities such as Precious Stones Gallery, which employs skilled refugees to produce high-quality handicraft products and markets them in Jordan and internationally. In a next step, selected trainees will then be given employment opportunities with project partner businesses while ARDD will facilitate the acquisition of work permits and provide legal consultations where needed and program management requirements.
The GEMS Project helps promote the refined skills and the high quality of products that refugees deliver and facilitates access to marketing opportunities within both the Jordanian and international markets.
The project thus not only enables vulnerable refugees and Jordanian host community women and youth to acquire specialized skills through connecting them to relevant training opportunities, but it also opens the doors to sustainable and legally safe income opportunities within the Jordanian private sector. The project thus constitutes a first much needed step towards institutionalizing the cooperation between humanitarian and development aid agencies and the private sector in Jordan.
