Hunger for Freedom and Justice Never Dies: Honoring the Legacy of Khader Adnan

Share

Today we mourn the tragic passing of Khader Adnan, a Palestinian revolutionary, the knight of the Palestinian prisoners’ movement who died after an 86-day hunger strike in protest of his unjust imprisonment – without charge or trial – by the Israeli regime.

Adnan was a beacon of Palestinian resistance. He embodied tenacity, discipline, and resilience, paving the path to secure our liberation. Adnan’s teachings and influence were part of the body of thought that led to denouncing the failure of the Oslo Accords and the rejection of any compromise and negotiation over justice and rights for Palestinians.

As a political prisoner, Adnan was imprisoned twelve times and went on six hunger strikes throughout his 45 years of life. Despite suffering from severe, life-threatening conditions in his final days, Adnan remained steadfast in his longest hunger strike. Adnan’s toleration of mortal hunger showcases that no suffering is intense enough to break Palestinians’ spirit and unwavering commitment to liberate their land from the suffocating clutches of Zionist settler-colonialism.

Adnan’s death epitomizes the inhumane and choking conditions faced by Palestinian prisoners in administrative detention, detained without charge and trial, on the grounds of secret evidence and indefinitely. There are currently 1016 Palestinians in administrative detention, a policy Israel has practiced intentionally and systematically since time immemorial: this is willful deprivation of fair trial guarantees, a war crime that ought to be condemned and punished by the international community. Another 4,800 Palestinian political prisoners are held in Israeli jails that serve as a “living cemetery to the logic of elimination” inherent to the settler-colonial project of Zionism, as it was highlighted during ARDD’s recent webinar on Palestinian Prisoner’s Day organized with the participation of Al-Haq, Addameer, Mezan, Adalah to express solidarity with the Palestinian political prisoners who are and have been forced to pass through Israeli jails.

The loss of Khader Adnan is profoundly felt by the whole Palestinian people and the Arab world and we will remember him as a hero who gave his life for Palestinian liberation.
