The Nahda triggered a debate on the philosophical underpinnings of reform and change. The debate centered around the role of tradition and heritage as well as on the role of the individual and society in the process of change Arab societies were undergoing. Philosophers of the Nahda period highlighted a focus on humanism as a new way forward to reform and change whereby the individual is at the center stage of this process.
Current reform and change initiatives often lack a debate on their affects and on the underlying philosophical assumptions. ARDD will play a leading role in guiding a debate on these affects while at the same time providing directions for a way forward for reform and change.
