Joint NGO statement ahead of the European Council of 28-29 June 2016

Monday, July 11, 2016

Faced with the ongoing prospect of arrivals on their shore, the European Union is increasingly adopting a policy of deterrence. As witnessed in the Turkey EU deal signed in March 2016, this has grave consequences for refugees. As a Jordanian local organization, ARDD has long advocated for refugees’ right to access justice in Jordan and abroad. In line with this, ARDD has signed onto a statement with 138 other NGOs in the Euro-Mediterranean expressing deep concern for the EU policies to contain migration. As the statement says, ‘The wider repercussions of this should not be underestimated. It is hard to see how Europe can ask partner countries to keep their doors open, to host large-scale refugee populations and prevent further movements while at the same time Member States refuse to shoulder their fair share of responsibility for protecting people who flee their homes.’
