The Arab Renaissance for Democracy and Development (ARDD) and representatives from the Future of Jabal Amman Committee held a coordination meeting with the City Director of the Greater Amman Municipality, Engineer Ahmad Al-Malkawi, on Tuesday, 5 August 2025, to discuss avenues of cooperation in enhancing the Jabal Amman neighborhood while preserving its unique heritage character.
The meeting brought together Engineer Ne’ma Qattanani, Executive Director of Engineering at the Municipality; Senator Michel Nazzal, Chair of the Future of Jabal Amman Committee; Ms. Samar Muhareb, Executive Director of ARDD; and Engineer Marah Al-Khayyat, Advisor at ARDD and Coordinator of the Committee.
During the meeting, Muhareb presented the preliminary participatory plan for enhancing Jabal Amman, developed in cooperation with UN-Habitat and the German Jordanian University. She highlighted ARDD’s achievements in building strong connections with the local community and implementing programs aimed at actively engaging residents in the neighborhood’s development.
Senator Nazzal emphasized the neighborhood’s significance, describing Jabal Amman as not just a residential area, but as the city’s living memory and a vibrant cultural and tourism hub. He stressed that the participatory plan should serve as a starting point for sustaining and enriching this heritage.
Al-Khayyat outlined how the preliminary plan was developed and the upcoming steps for implementing some of its components, underscoring the importance of partnership with the Greater Amman Municipality and the role of UN-Habitat in supporting its implementation as a model for other neighborhoods.
The Greater Amman Municipality expressed its interest in partnering with ARDD and the Future of Jabal Amman Committee to enhance the neighborhood. It was agreed to establish a supporting technical committee, chaired by the Director of the Comprehensive Planning Department, to review the plan’s elements and proposals, identify potential support mechanisms, and convene an expanded discussion session in the near future.
This cooperation is part of ongoing efforts to adopt Jabal Amman as a model neighborhood under the new building and zoning system, strengthening its heritage, tourism, and developmental standing.
