Social Protection and Economic Development (SPED)

Al-Nahda Center’s program for inclusive social protection aims at securing institutional commitment to gradually secure social rights and universal public services, including pensions, child benefits, and disability benefits.

ARDD´s research on inclusive social protection started in 2011 in answer to the calls of young people for justice and social protection during the Arab Spring. These demands became more pressing because of the devastating socioeconomic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Arab region. There is an urgent need to develop and promote a vision that better protects individuals and strengthens the capacities and capabilities of institutions to better address gaps in social protection in Jordan and MENA.

The key element of such a vision is to shift the current social protection paradigm from poverty alleviation schemes to an inclusive social protection system that covers Jordanians and refugees alike and that is fiscally sustainable. ARDD has partnered with regional and international entities to convene the Inclusive Social Security Policy Forum (ISSPF), aiming to engage stakeholders and policymakers in pursuing this vision.
