More than 150 men and women of all ages participated in the ‘Together We March for Women’s Renaissance Marathon’, which was held on Thursday, 30th September 2021 at the Al Hussein Sports City in Amman. The event was organized by the Arab Renaissance for Democracy and Development (ARDD), in partnership with UN Women and with the generous support of the Government of Australia and engaged participants of ARDD’s “Empowering Each Other” project’s initiative including local and international civil society organizations, local and international coalitions such as JIF, JONAF and AlNahda Networks for youth and women.

“This Marathon showcases the solidarity within our society. Men, women, youth, and the elderly all came together to call for women’s renaissance. This requires more civic participation and representation for women in decision-making positions in social, economic and political arenas.” said ARDD Chief Director, Ms. Samar Muhareb.

Welcoming the organization of this initiative, the Head of the Policies and Monitoring Unit at the Jordan National Committee for Women’s Affairs, Diana Haddadin, emphasized the importance of achieving positive change for women to unleash their full potential in all fields while reducing gender-based violence.

The “Empowering Each Other” project is implemented by ARDD within the framework of its gender justice programs. The project seeks to raise the awareness of both women and men on gender justice issues and to strengthen the capacities of national institutions that that work to prevent gender-based violence.

“The Australian Government is steadfastly committed to being at the forefront of efforts to promote gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls – globally and in Jordan. We are committed to building the long-term resilience of communities and individuals in vulnerable circumstances, including Jordanians and Syrian and other refugees” said Mr. Bernard Lynch, Ambassador of Australia to Jordan.

The Government of Australia is a long-standing partner for the implementation of the UN Women’s Oasis model, which employs a holistic ‘resilience and empowerment approach to support Syrian refugee and vulnerable Jordanian women and their communities to access to long-term livelihood opportunities, protection services, and leadership engagement. Within this framework, UN Women supports national partners like ARDD to promote women’s civic participation and community mobilization, while raising awareness on gender-based violence prevention and protection mechanisms.

“UN Women is committed to working with women at the community level and to co-creating opportunities with them so their voices are heard in local and national decision-making processes,” said Evan Qursha, on behalf of UN Women Jordan.

Prior to the start of the marathon, the Public Security Musical Ensemble presented musical performances. The marathon was won by Mr. Myaser Laith, who highlighted the importance of taking part in the event to show support to and advocate for women’s rights. This was echoed by other participants, like Marwa Raed, who confirmed their commitment to contribute to raise awareness on women’s empowerment.
