âShurouqâ is the Arabic word for âsunriseâ. As reflected in its name, the Shurouq project aims to illuminate the road to a just and peaceful life for vulnerable Syrian refugees and host community women in the governorates of Amman, Irbid, and Zarqa. Complementing past and current projects carried out by ARDD and furthering our mission to increase womenâs protection, the Shurouq project enhances the prevention of and response to Gender-based Violence, targeting specifically women above the age of 16 who are at risk of experiencing or may have experienced GBV. It also supports to empower women to be confident in advocating for themselves and by creating allies within their communities.
Implemented by the Arab Renaissance for Democracy and Development (ARDD) during September 2017 till August 2018, and funded by the US Department of Stateâs Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration, the project provides a comprehensive education of personal status laws, womenâs rights, and prevention and response techniques to GBV. The project conducts high-quality legal awareness and aid services, psychosocial support group sessions, and civic engagement training while approaching the issue of GBV at both the individual and community levels.
