With 40 percent of the 60 million forcibly displaced people worldwide originating from Arab countries, the Arab region is in turn the second most affected by forced displacement the world over. Forced displacement, inadequately protected migration and statelessness have become common problems affecting the lives of millions in the region. Like refugees, among the forcibly displaced and stateless persons, migrant workers in the region also have a precarious legal status, and often face discriminatory treatment and the stigma that comes from being an “alien” in host communities. This impacts their access to health, education, work as well as other aspects of enjoyment of life. Improving this situation is central to ARDD’s mandate and core values.
The Migration, Displacement, and Statelessness Program addresses the problems of refugees, emigrants, and displaced and stateless persons in and from the Arab region. This is done through the following pillars:
– Raising awareness about asylum and forced migration issues.
– Addressing discriminatory policies and treatment of migrants and refugees in and from the Arab region.
– Supporting legal and social protection programs in partnership with relevant stakeholders.
– Proposing solutions and alternatives for stateless people, and addressing the impact of protracted refugee and migration crises on protection systems and the application of international laws and treaties governing migration and asylum issues.
